Pigmentation Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in melanin. Melanin is the natural pigment that gives our skin, hair and eyes their color. We all have melanin. A number of factors trigger an increase in melanin production. However the main causes are sun exposure, hormonal influences, age, Past sun exposure, skin injuries, harsh product damage or inflammation.
Consequently, Vitamin C plays an important role in maintaining skin health and the promotion of keratinocytes and decrease melanin synthesis, leading to antioxidant protection against UV-induced photodamage.

There are two types of pigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is darker in appearance to the rest of the skin on the face/body, whereas Hypopigmentation is paler than the rest of the skin.
Hyperpigmentation occurs when the melanocytes in the deeper layers of the skin produce a skin-darkening pigment known as melanin. If melanin is over-produced, it may result in darker patches appearing on the skin’s surface. Hypopigmentation in skin is the result of loss of melanin production.
