Covid Rash HOW IS THE SKIN AFFECTED BY COVID???

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fatigue, fever, and cough. However, reports of skin rashes are now accepted as a less common symptom. A 2020 study estimated skin rashes and skin symptoms from covid were around 1%. But a 2021 review suggest it may be much higher. To date, the exact numbers are unknown.

Symptoms

Some general symptoms associated with many COVID-19 rashes include:

Rashes are reported in many known cases. These are accompanied by a pink to purple discolouration. It may appear purple, ashy grey, or dark brown on a higher Fitzpatrick skin.

There may be swelling and itching, but note not all types of COVID rash will itch. The onset of the rash occurring a during COVID attack can vary. In some instances, it may appear at the beginning of the illness.

In contrast, it may happen several days after other symptoms have developed in others.

Research compiled from the American Academy of Dermatology suggests COVID rash can last 2 to 12 days on average. However, rashes impacting the toes may last much longer.

Rash Appearances

The exact appearance of COVID rashes can vary considerably. The skin rash due to COVID can take many forms, such as Hives: rash can appear as itchy patches or wheals that most often affect the limbs and torso.

Macules and papules: In some cases, a COVID rash can consist of itchy spots that may either be flat or raised. This type of rash often impacts the torso.

Rash with blisters: in this case, the inflammation can appear with blisters similar to chickenpox. It is seen mainly on the torso and may itch.

Lace-like pattern: Some COVID rashes can have rings of skin discolouration that form a lace, or a net-like pattern is seen on the legs.

Pinpoint spots: This COVID rash has dark pinpoint spots again found mainly on the legs.

Toe rash: Also referred to as covid toes, has emerged with a rash-causing pink, red or purple patches and swelling of one or more toes. These may be painful, itchy, or have a burning sensation. They are mainly seen in young adults.

What’s the best way to treat a rash from COVID-19? If you have developed an unexplained rash due to covid and severe symptoms, chat with your doctor; if you  have a rash but no Covid symptoms, it’s prudent to have a covid test.

Treatments

Suggestions of how you can help treat a covid inflammation at home ALWAYS consulting with your medical specialist… Applying a cool compress: of water and bicarb or Fleur De Mer Soothing Lotion onto the affected area may help ease the redness itching. Trying a bi-carb bath: can potentially help to soothe irritated skin as well as Calming Mask. A seaweed bath or foot bath if the feet are affected. Chat to your pharmacist: the counter, topical products may help manage the itching or swelling associated with the rash.

A low dose cortisone cream is what may be suggested. Antihistamines: Your pharmacy may help reduce symptoms if taken from the onset of the rash. Don’t scratch; please avoid doing this, as it can increase the risk of infection, scarring, or skin pigmentation. 

Furthermore, Other complications can be poor sleep due to itchiness. 

Hence, photosensitivity after being outside for a short period; can lead to pigmentation and the condition lasting longer.

When does a skin rash happen in COVID-19? There is a lot of variety in when COVID skin rashes appear and how long they last. For those who get skin symptoms, almost half (47%) of people experience them simultaneously as other COVID‐19 symptoms and over a third (35%) afterwards. However, a significant minority (17%) have skin symptoms before other signs.

COVID Fingers and Toes

Fingers and toes also tend to appear later, weeks or months after someone initially becomes infected. They are more common in young people and those with a mild infection. Hence rashes can be stubborn and may require prescribed medication. Therefore, They can last a long time, sometimes up to several months.

Furthermore, Some COVID-related rashes come and go in waves. These are commonly reported in people with long COVID or post-COVID syndrome.

Data from the ZOE COVID Symptom Study shows that rashes reappear after people receive their vaccinations, often returning within a few days of their jab.  Symptom Study shows that a new skin rash was a slightly better predictive symptom of having a positive test for COVID-19 than fever or cough. For one in five people with COVID-19, a skin rash is the only symptom they experience (21%).
